Movie File Formats

I am creating some podcasts for delivery through RSS feeds for PSP. However, I am dissapointed that the blog entry does not seem to be visible and the feed only delivers the file (picture, movie or sound). Is this a limitation of the PSP?

Secondly, does anyone have a list of acceptable movie formats that can be viewed in the PSP?

I have already discovered that the PSP cannot access .mov files throught the feed but will allow you to store a file on the meory card. Any format recommendations for video podcast feeds?

Movie formats supported by the PSP are simple profile MPEG-4, held within an MP4 container format. (Translated this means must be an non-propietary MPEG-4)

Best results I've found, based on my brothers PSP (i'm not part of the PSP testing, only the Nokia 770), are that the device will support only the following spec, or lower.

QVGA Resolution
29.97 Frames Per Second
1500kbps video bitrate
Stereo Audio @ 128kbps

If you are savvy in computing, you'll notice that this is the maximum spec for the 3GP format, a format which is commonly used on mobile phones, though the PSP can use the higest quality settings of it.

Using this in your feed should work, you can't stream from the sites in this format it should be noted, it will download first, allowing you to play at your leisure.

An important note, though.. There is a lot of chatter amongst my friends (all of whom own PSPs) that the format must named unusually, typically beginnine MV####.MP4, then placed into some MP_ROOT folder on the memory stick. I have not been able to play around to test this, but I would keep this in mind, for your next test.

The arrival of PSP Media Manager should remove a lot of the previous frustrations with movies on the PSP and with the most recent Firmware it should be possible to download an MPEG-4 file straight to PSP without needing to do any conversions.

Is an abundance of freeware in the market that will also enable you to encode from .mov to .mp4

Video is a little tricky. So far I've found that sometimes tricky to use. Sometimes it allows mp4 files to play from the VIDEO folder, sometimes from the MP_ROOT folder. There's no logic to it! [I use a software called PQ PSP Movie Maker and it might need updating if Sony have altered the codecs for the PSP].

I've been reading that the firmware has been updated to 3.0 and that the list of supported video formats has been increased. I'll check it out. I've got a Sony Cybershot camera that records mp4 files - but they don't seem to play directly and have to be converted - which is annoying.
